Learning this Week:
Writing: Students will be working on a creative narrative piece about being trapped in a snow globe. We are working on a shared, interactive piece together, paying attention to details, leads, and sequence of the story. Students are practicing the revising process by adding details and creating rich sentences using sensory details. 

Math: Students have just started Topic 5 (Division). We have been using base ten blocks, drawing pictures, and using our knowledge of multiples to solve basic problems. Now, we are working with larger dividends and using the partial quotient method of solving. 

ELA: Students are focusing on the genre of traditional literature. We have discussed the differences, and are specifically reading and analyzing the elements of pourquoi tales. Students are reading a variety of stories, including reader's theater to deepen their understanding.

S.S./Science: Students will be working on map skills for the next two weeks as we prepare to study the U.S. Regions. Students will be working on basic map skills and looking at a variety of maps.

Learning this Week:
Writing: Students have a special week, with multiple visits by our writing guest, Big Ryan! He will be telling stories and teaching the importance of creative writing along with techniques for the students. 

Math: Students will be taking their Topic 1-4 Benchmark Assessment. We have just started Topic 5 (Division). Students will gain a conceptual understanding of how to divide and what it means to divide. We will also introduce writing in mathematics and how ti write a thorough math explanation. 

ELA: We will read the book, Love That Dog, by Sharon Creech. Students will develop an understanding of poetic elements through the use of this narrative poem book as well as from analyzing other poems. Students will write their own poems based on inspiration from published poets. 

Science/S.S: Students will be wrapping up their unit on volcanoes and earthquakes with an activity on seismic waves. We learn how earthquakes are related to tsunamis. We will begin our social studies unit, which includes map skills and the United States.

Learning this Week: 

Writing: Students are finishing persuasive turkey writing pieces just in time for Thanksgiving! In addition, we have started to discuss, "What is poetry?" and will look at some famous poems and authors.

Math: Students will taking their Topic 4 (Multiplication) Assessment on Monday. We will be looking at lines of symmetry on Tuesday and reviewing some basic geometry terms to complete a pattern block turkey.

ELA: Students will be demonstrating their understanding of theme and genre by completing a assessment. We will be starting the movie, Wonder, now that we've finished reading the book.

Science: Students will be making pilgrim boats as part of a STEM activity. We will be completing a cut and sort to show our understanding of erosion, weathering, and deposition.

Learning this Week: 
Writing: Students will begin looking at example opinion/persuasive writings. Together, we will notice the elements of opinion writing. We will begin our writing for our turkey disguise by brainstorming ideas as a class. Students will also be introduced to Vocabulary #20 words and be expected to use them in writing. 

Math: Students have just taken their online topic 3 Assessment and we will begin topic 4 (Multiplying 2-Digit Numbers). We will be rounding, estimating, and use different methods to multiply.

ELA: We will be focusing on the setting in stories. Students will be able to infer the importance of setting in realistic, historical fiction, and fantasy. Students will also be able to decipher when the setting affects a character's behavior. 

Science: We will end our unit on landforms by focusing on earthquakes and volcanoes. Students will be able to understand how they are formed and the effect they have on earth and people.

Learning this Week: 

Writing: Students will be finishing up their personal narrative as well as completing a narrative story for Halloween. We will look at different genres of writing as well as write from different points of view. Students will be introduced to Vocabulary #21. 

Math: Students will continue to practice multiplying 4 digit- and 1 digit numbers. We will be taking our assessment on Thursday. Students will also be introduced to "writing about math" and we will review key vocabulary for topic 4. 

ELA: Students will continue to write reading letters, book talks, and jot down their thinking on sticky notes as they read. We will read different read alouds and discuss how the author create the mood of a story. We will also focus on the significance of setting in books. 

Science: Students will complete a mystery science about bones in the hand. We will conclude our unit on landforms and bodies of water. Students will be reading about the layers of the Earth and the effect it has on earthquakes and volcanoes.

Learning this Week:
Writing: Students will be learning how to write thoughtful conclusions to their personal narratives in addition to adding dialogue. Students will learn how to put conversation in their writing to bring it to life for their reader. They will get a chance to write a Halloween conversation piece to practice dialogue too.

Math: Students have just started Topic 3: Multiplying by 1 Digit Numbers. We have started by multiplying numbers by multiples of 10 and will continue to practice multiplication by using the distributive property and partial products.

ELA: Students will continue to write respond to their reading by writing reading response letters. They are expected to focus on theme and character traits to demonstrate their own understanding based on their own book. Students will be begin writing their first "book talk" too.

Science: Students will finish and present their landform slideshow. We will dive deeper into the layers of the Earth, and how volcanoes and earthquakes are formed.

Learning this Week:
Writing: Students will be finishing up their first personal narrative writing piece. We will continue to work on using transition words, separating our thoughts with paragraphs, and starting interesting leads. Students will be introduced to Week #23 vocabulary words and we will do a few activities using the words. Please continue to practice using them at home :) 

Math: Students will take their Topic 2 (Addition & Subtraction) assessment. We will start Topic 3 (Multiplying by 1 Digit Numbers). Students will be multiplying my multiples of 10 as well as being learning about partial products. Please continue to have your child practice their math facts at home for more success with this topic!

ELA: Students will continue to think about theme and character traits this week as we could our read aloud, Wonder, and will end the week with a quick quiz on genre. We will be discussing book talks as part of our ELA routine. 

Science: Students will continue learning about landforms and how they are formed. Each student will be assigned a specific, real world landform to research and create a powerpoint on. We will also be completing our first mystery science lesson about volcanoes.

Learning this Week:
Writing: Students have been learning new vocabulary words and practicing how to use them in their writing. They have typed up narrative quick writes using as many words as they could. We have also been working on our own personal narratives. We've read and discussed what makes a strong personal narrative and continue to learn new techniques to add to our writing. We are also typing up our own version of "The Important Book"

Math: Students have just taken the Topic 1 Place Value assessment on the computer. We will continue to review place value as we begin Topic 2: Addition & Subtraction. Students have been learning how to use bar diagrams and have been practicing mental math strategies.

ELA: Students have been looking closely at theme, self-monitoring thinking, and genre. As we continue to do read alouds we reflect on these concepts and students apply them during their independent reading time. Each student knows the expectations for reading letters and all have written their first one!

Science/S.S.: Students are continuing their learning about landforms by exploring DiscoveryEd videos and articles.We are also using Scholastic News to deepen our understanding of landforms in the world around us.

Learning this Week:

Writing: Students will be continuing to complete prompted quick writes in order to build seed ideas for their first writing piece. They will be introduced to personal narratives and explore powerful language used by other writers. 

Math: We will continue with Topic 1 Place Value. Students will continue using and demonstrating their understanding of the terms, "value" "place value" and "expanded form". We will also be taking our Math Star testing on Thursday.

ELA: Students will be introduced to "sticky note thinking" as well as write their first reading letter. We will discuss why we abandon books, and the different genres we like to read. 

S.S./Sci: We will review the continents and oceans and complete an activity about Pangea and plate tectonics. This will lead into our essential questions about landforms and how they are formed.

Learning this Week:
Writing: We will be completing our grade level writing prompt task by giving students two 45 minute sessions.  We will review the expectations of writer's workshop and practice modeling what it should look like in the classroom. Students will share and brainstorm ideas using a variety of quick writes with prompts and pictures. 

Math: Students will be logging into their PearsonRealize math account to take their first quick check on place value. (*Please note that quick checks are NOT test grades and are used to collect data and inform instruction.) We will also be exploring our new interactive math program, ST Math, and will continue our learning about place value within Topic 1. Students will also be taking their placement test online. 

ELA: As we continue our discussion about the different sections of the reader's notebook, students will also be introduced to their first reading letter.  We will talk about how "Reading is Thinking" and begin taking sticky notes as we read our independent books. Students will also complete a high-frequency word spelling test. In addition, we will begin reading, Wonder as our class read aloud. 

S.S/Sci: Students will log into DiscoveryEd and begin learning about the different parts of the program. They will complete their first assignment about Landforms and we will discuss our essential questions for this unit. We will also do an activity to review the continents and oceans.

Writing: Students will be setting goals for year, organizing their writer's notebook, and reflect by completing a quick write. We will be reading the book, Only One You and writing about our uniqueness.

Math: Students will set up their Envision, XtraMath, and Prodigy accounts. We will review expectations for each of these programs in addition to expectations for math centers and games. We will begin our placement test and start Topic 1 (Generalize Place Value Understanding). 

ELA: We will discuss and read different texts concerning 9/11. We will complete a main idea organizer and read multiple picture books. In addition, we will finish our chapter read aloud, I Survived: 9/11.

S.S/Sci: Students will login to DiscoveryEd and we will explore the online program together. We will set up our science notebooks and explore the questions, "What is science?" and "What is the scientific method?"

Math: We've started our Step Up to Grade 5 lessons. Students are reviewing and mastering our fourth grade decimal standards, while learning new, grade 5 material. Students will complete a decimal activity and quiz to show their understanding.

Science: Students will be presenting their adaptation power points and learning about how the nervous system works with sensory organs and receptors. We will complete a Mystery Science to see how long it takes our nerves to travel to our brain. We will be comparing the way our senses work in comparison to animals.

Math: We just started topic 16 (Geometry). Students will be learning and using many geometric terms to describe shapes. We will be classifying triangles and quadrilaterals based on their sides and angles in addition to reviewing previously learned concepts as we prepare for MCAS next week. 

Science: Students will be creating a creature to survive in an imaginary habitat based on real-life animal adaptations. They will be drawing and labeling the animal based on its survival needs. We will also be picking animals to research and present on using power-point and reliable sources.

Science: Students will be completing an investigation to discover how animals use adaptations to survive. We will use common adaptions to design our own, inventive animal as well as compare and contrast plant and animal structure.

Math: Students will be finishing up decimal notation and complete the Topic 12 online assessment. We will also be taking out middle of year math assessment, including Topic 1-12. This week's learning will include the start of Topic 13: Units of Measurement. Students will be practicing converting units in both the customary and metric systems. 

Science: Students have researched and investigated the different life cycles of animals, including insect metamorphosis. This week we will be classifying animals by their characteristics. We will comparing and contrasting living organisms.

Math: Students will begin Topic 11 (Line Plots). We will be analyzing data on line plots to the nearest fraction and pay attention to outliers. Students will be making their own line plots to display data at the end of the week. In addition, we will begin integrating geometry to the center rotations. 

Science: We will be wrapping up our unit on natural resources (renewable/ nonrenewable). Students will complete two online labs as well as a few activities to show their understanding of the ways we use natural resources as a source of energy.

Students will complete an exploration on DisocveryEd about fossil fuels and discover the importance of using it wisely.

Science: Students will be completing a Valentine's Day Mystery Science this week. We will finish up our thinking unit on fossils and the way they impact the environment as we begin to discuss and read about fossil fuels.

Science: We will be taking our online, volcano assessment and begin discussing our essential questions about Fossils. Students will be reading about the different types of fossils and completing an online lab to discover what materials form the best fossil.

Science: We will be reading and discussing the different types of volcanoes and the factors that determine the way a volcano erupts. Students will be mapping volcanoes around the world to look for patterns and learn about the Ring of Fire.

Math: We will be starting Topic 8 (Fraction Equivalence). Students will identify equivalent fractions by using area models, number lines, and multiplication. We will focus on math practice #4 (modeling with mathematics) and #5 (use tools strategically).

S.S/ Science: Students will conclude learning about the U.S. Regions by participating in a gallery walk. This will allow everyone to showcase their hard work (investigation posters) and learn more about each of the U.S. regions. In science, we will continue our learning about different types of volcanoes. Students will be analyzing different volcanoes around the world and make bar graphs based on volcanoes in Alaska.

Science/ S.S. : Students will be finishing up their learning about the U.S. Regions by creating an investigation poster and wrapping it up with a gallery walk. We will begin our unit on volcanoes and create a diagram of the different parts.
