Week of 10/29

Learning this Week: 

Writing: Students will be finishing up their personal narrative as well as completing a narrative story for Halloween. We will look at different genres of writing as well as write from different points of view. Students will be introduced to Vocabulary #21. 

Math: Students will continue to practice multiplying 4 digit- and 1 digit numbers. We will be taking our assessment on Thursday. Students will also be introduced to "writing about math" and we will review key vocabulary for topic 4. 

ELA: Students will continue to write reading letters, book talks, and jot down their thinking on sticky notes as they read. We will read different read alouds and discuss how the author create the mood of a story. We will also focus on the significance of setting in books. 

Science: Students will complete a mystery science about bones in the hand. We will conclude our unit on landforms and bodies of water. Students will be reading about the layers of the Earth and the effect it has on earthquakes and volcanoes.

Week of 10/22

Learning this Week:
Writing: Students will be learning how to write thoughtful conclusions to their personal narratives in addition to adding dialogue. Students will learn how to put conversation in their writing to bring it to life for their reader. They will get a chance to write a Halloween conversation piece to practice dialogue too.

Math: Students have just started Topic 3: Multiplying by 1 Digit Numbers. We have started by multiplying numbers by multiples of 10 and will continue to practice multiplication by using the distributive property and partial products.

ELA: Students will continue to write respond to their reading by writing reading response letters. They are expected to focus on theme and character traits to demonstrate their own understanding based on their own book. Students will be begin writing their first "book talk" too.

Science: Students will finish and present their landform slideshow. We will dive deeper into the layers of the Earth, and how volcanoes and earthquakes are formed.

Week of 10/15

Learning this Week:
Writing: Students will be finishing up their first personal narrative writing piece. We will continue to work on using transition words, separating our thoughts with paragraphs, and starting interesting leads. Students will be introduced to Week #23 vocabulary words and we will do a few activities using the words. Please continue to practice using them at home :) 

Math: Students will take their Topic 2 (Addition & Subtraction) assessment. We will start Topic 3 (Multiplying by 1 Digit Numbers). Students will be multiplying my multiples of 10 as well as being learning about partial products. Please continue to have your child practice their math facts at home for more success with this topic!

ELA: Students will continue to think about theme and character traits this week as we could our read aloud, Wonder, and will end the week with a quick quiz on genre. We will be discussing book talks as part of our ELA routine. 

Science: Students will continue learning about landforms and how they are formed. Each student will be assigned a specific, real world landform to research and create a powerpoint on. We will also be completing our first mystery science lesson about volcanoes.

Week of 10/1

Learning this Week:
Writing: Students have been learning new vocabulary words and practicing how to use them in their writing. They have typed up narrative quick writes using as many words as they could. We have also been working on our own personal narratives. We've read and discussed what makes a strong personal narrative and continue to learn new techniques to add to our writing. We are also typing up our own version of "The Important Book"

Math: Students have just taken the Topic 1 Place Value assessment on the computer. We will continue to review place value as we begin Topic 2: Addition & Subtraction. Students have been learning how to use bar diagrams and have been practicing mental math strategies.

ELA: Students have been looking closely at theme, self-monitoring thinking, and genre. As we continue to do read alouds we reflect on these concepts and students apply them during their independent reading time. Each student knows the expectations for reading letters and all have written their first one!

Science/S.S.: Students are continuing their learning about landforms by exploring DiscoveryEd videos and articles.We are also using Scholastic News to deepen our understanding of landforms in the world around us.
