Week of 9/25

Learning this Week:

Writing: Students will be continuing to complete prompted quick writes in order to build seed ideas for their first writing piece. They will be introduced to personal narratives and explore powerful language used by other writers. 

Math: We will continue with Topic 1 Place Value. Students will continue using and demonstrating their understanding of the terms, "value" "place value" and "expanded form". We will also be taking our Math Star testing on Thursday.

ELA: Students will be introduced to "sticky note thinking" as well as write their first reading letter. We will discuss why we abandon books, and the different genres we like to read. 

S.S./Sci: We will review the continents and oceans and complete an activity about Pangea and plate tectonics. This will lead into our essential questions about landforms and how they are formed.

Week of 9/17

Learning this Week:
Writing: We will be completing our grade level writing prompt task by giving students two 45 minute sessions.  We will review the expectations of writer's workshop and practice modeling what it should look like in the classroom. Students will share and brainstorm ideas using a variety of quick writes with prompts and pictures. 

Math: Students will be logging into their PearsonRealize math account to take their first quick check on place value. (*Please note that quick checks are NOT test grades and are used to collect data and inform instruction.) We will also be exploring our new interactive math program, ST Math, and will continue our learning about place value within Topic 1. Students will also be taking their placement test online. 

ELA: As we continue our discussion about the different sections of the reader's notebook, students will also be introduced to their first reading letter.  We will talk about how "Reading is Thinking" and begin taking sticky notes as we read our independent books. Students will also complete a high-frequency word spelling test. In addition, we will begin reading, Wonder as our class read aloud. 

S.S/Sci: Students will log into DiscoveryEd and begin learning about the different parts of the program. They will complete their first assignment about Landforms and we will discuss our essential questions for this unit. We will also do an activity to review the continents and oceans.

Welcome Back!

Hello Everyone! Welcome back to MKG for another great school year. I look forward to meeting everyone at open house, but feel free to email me if you'd like to talk sooner! I also want to thank you all for turning in the necessary back-to-school forms so quickly and sending your children in with so many school supplies- it is greatly appreciated!

Learning this Week:
Writing: Students will be setting goals for year, organizing their writer's notebook, and reflect by completing a quick write. We will be reading the book, Only One You and writing about our uniqueness.

Math: Students will set up their Envision, XtraMath, and Prodigy accounts. We will review expectations for each of these programs in addition to expectations for math centers and games. We will begin our placement test and start Topic 1 (Generalize Place Value Understanding). 

ELA: We will discuss and read different texts concerning 9/11. We will complete a main idea organizer and read multiple picture books. In addition, we will finish our chapter read aloud, I Survived: 9/11.

S.S/Sci: Students will login to DiscoveryEd and we will explore the online program together. We will set up our science notebooks and explore the questions, "What is science?" and "What is the scientific method?"
