Learning this Week:
Writing: We will be focusing on different parts of speech, commas, and writing interesting, detailed sentences. We will practice using vocabulary words within our narrative writing. 
Math: We will continue learning about and practicing equivalent fractions. Students should be able to recognize equivalent fractions through models and number lines. They should understand how to find equivalent fractions by multiplying and dividing. 
ELA: Students will begin creating their own informational book on Immigration. Students will be expected to have a glossary, paragraphs, headings, and a table of contents in their book. 
S.S/Science: We will create an organizer to differentiate between weathering and erosion.

Week of 2/13

Learning this Week: 
Writing: We will be finishing up our postcards that go along with our read aloud, Esperanza Rising. In addition, we will complete a small opinion writing piece. Students will get to pick between two topics: extra tax on soda, or rewards for perfect attendance. Finally, we will do some fun writing activities for Valentine's Day! 
Math: We will continue to do small group work with factors and multiples, but will be starting Topic 8 (Fractions) this week. Students will begin with fraction equivalence. 
ELA: Students will continue taking notes on the major topics of our unit. We will continue to look at different sources as well as discuss text structure. Students will be able to identify the different structures of an informational text as well as use text features to being their book about immigration. 
Sci/S.S: We will do some additional research on our mystery state from last week (Minnesota) as well as complete a science lab about weathering and erosion.

Learning this Week:
Writing: Students will be learning new vocabulary words this week and will be expected to use them in a variety of writing activities. This week, our writing will focus on main idea and purpose. We will be writing postcards based on our read aloud book, Esperanza Rising. Students will have specific ideas to write about in the postcard from the perspective of our main character (Mexican immigrant living in California). 
Math: This week, we will finish up Topic 7, Factors and Multiples. We will most likely test on Wednesday (depending on student learning). The assessment will be given on the tablets. By the end of the week we will be starting Topic 8 (Fraction Equivalence). 
ELA: We will continue to use different strategies to take notes on all aspects on immigration. We have finished learning about the Statue of Liberty, and will continue to learn about the different reasons immigrants came to America and the process they went through at Ellis Island. We will be watching videos, reading articles, and even doing some reader's theatre! 
S.S./Sci: We will have a special treat this week! Our technology specialist will be discussing landforms and United States as we prepare for an interactive Skype with a mystery classroom somewhere in the U.S.! Students will be asking and answering clues.
