Week of 1/30

Learning this Week:
Writing: We will be typing up our Haiku poems on Google Classroom and submitting them to the Poet's Digest. We will be analyzing the different types of informational tests and writing responses to current events. We will practice using text evidence too. 
Math: We will be starting Topic 7 (Factors and Multiples). This is a short topic and we might be able to finish by the end of the week. Students will be expected to draw arrays to represent factors of a number and will be expected to know the difference between factors and multiples. 
ELA/S.S: We will finish up learning about the Statue of Liberty. Students will learn how to convert notes into a summary. In addition, we will begin reading and taking notes on Ellis Island and the process immigrants went through to come to America.

Learning this Week: 
Writing: This week we will be finishing up inferring and writing poems. If time allows, students will have time to design their poetry book cover on the tablets. In addition, we will be looking at audience and how to adjust our writing according to the audience. 
Math: We will be finishing up Topic 6 (Word Problems). Depending on student learning, we will test on Friday.
ELA: We will continue to read, research, and take notes on all aspects of immigration. This week we will be paying close attention to the Statue of Liberty and the 4 waves of immigration. We will be reading Coming to America and discussing what it was like to immigrate to America. 
S.S/Sci: Depending on our immigration (integrates social studies), we will try to start reading about the rock cycle.

Week of 1/17

Learning this Week:
Writing: We will continue to write different types of poems, as well as finish reading Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. We will continue to record the sensory information we notice in the poem book. In addition, we will practice and use our vocabulary words. 
Math: We just finished Topic 5- on the tablets! Students will have a combined paper and computer score for Topic 5. In addition, we will be starting Topic 6 (Use Operations with Whole Numbers to Solve Problems). This topic focuses on strategies for solving word problems.
ELA: We will be starting our new unit, Immigration! We will be digging into a few of our big ideas, such as why would a person emigrate. We will be looking at the different vocabulary that coordinates with this unit too. By Friday we will start discussing the 4 waves of immigration.
S.S/Science: Students attended a presentation on Tuesday put on by the Museum of Science. They studied different animal adaptations and discussed the differences between reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.

Week of 1/9/17

      Thank you for your support! We LOVE being humanitarians in Room 41! 

Learning this Week:
Writing: We will be formulating open response answers by using a checklist and close reading together. Students will be using evidence from the natural disaster articles to support their answers. We will also be taking our middle of the year writing benchmark assessment. 
Math: We will continue with Topic 5 (Long Division). We will continue to practice using the two different methods as well estimating answers. Students are expected to check their answers using the inverse operation (multiplication) as well as be able to estimate their quotient. We will take our assessment at the end of this week or beginning of next week depending on student learning. 
ELA: We will continue learning about the elements of poetry, while working on fluency each day. In addition we will be reading Love That Dog as a class. Students will infer and take notes on the sensory images throughout the book. We will also continue writing different types of poems, such as a diamante and cinquain poem.
Science/S.S: We will finish up the effects of natural disasters and move onto weathering and erosion next week.

Week of 1/3/17

I am so excited to be back and ready to start 2017 with 4th grade!

Learning this Week: 
Writing: We will begin by setting goals and reflecting on 2016. We will also be playing vocabulary games to reinforce understanding. We will begin a free-choice narrative writing piece too. 
Math: We will continue with long division in Topic 5. We will continue learning the different methods of division and practicing words problems. 
ELA: We will be kicking of the year with poetry! We will be learning all of the different poetic terms as well as read and analyze different types of poems. 
S.S/Science: Students will be divided into groups and will teach the class the different properties, causes, and effects of earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes.
