Week of 5/31

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone had a long, relaxing Memorial Day Weekend!

Learning this Week:
Math: We will be wrapping up conversions and measurement by Friday. We will continue to practice with both the customary and metric system.
Writing: We will be wrapping up our BFG writing and begin a persuasive piece of writing. Students will need to persuade their audience by using details and research.
S.S/Science- We will be wrapping up Mexico by presenting investigation posters and watching a movie about the Day of the Dead.
ELA: We will continue reading, Number the Stars, and looking at the book from multiple points of view.

Learning this week:
Math: This week we will continue with Topic 14. Students will be measuring capacity, length and weight. In addition, they will be making conversions. In small group, we will be reviewing geometry.
Writing: This week we will continue/start our BFG writing. Students will be writing a detailed dream story using all five senses to paint a picture for their reader.
S.S/Science: Students will continue working on groups and taking notes on the features of Mexico. They will be creating investigation posters and reading about the Day of the Dead.
ELA: We will read Number the Stars and reflect on the mood and tone of the story. In addition, we will be reading about Lois Lowry and taking about different points of view.

Learning this week:
Math: We will be wrapping up Topic 16 (Angles) and testing on Wednesday. We will be starting Topic 14 (Measurement) by Thursday.
Writing: This week we will wrap up our creative writing pieces by including rich vocabulary words and starting sentences with verbs. In addition, we will finish reading The BFG and students will be given a dream jar to write their own dream.
S.S/Science: We will wrap up simple machines and how they help make work easier. In addition, we will bring studying Mexico.
ELA: We will officially start our new unit on the Holocaust and Word War II. We will begin reading Number the Stars and discussing the genre "historical fiction."

Week of 5/9

Reminders for the week:

Learning this Week: 
Math: This week we will be classifying polygons, identifying lines of symmetry and wrap up Topic 16 (Lines, Angles, Shapes). We will also be doing review work, as well as briefly discussing different ways to measure and hopefully going outside to work on perimeter and area!
Writing: This week we will wrap up our opinion writing pieces and begin working on a personal narrative. We will focus on word choice and using our senses to paint a picture for our reader.
S.S/Science: We will continue our unit on simple machines. Students will be able to identify the six types of simple machines and how they make work easier. 
ELA: We will continue working on our biography posters, in addition to starting our new unit, which will be World War II and the Holocaust. We will be looking at events through multiple perspectives.

Learning this Week: 
Math: We've just started Topic 16 (Geometry) Students will be learning lots of vocabulary this week in order to identify shapes and angles. 
Writing: We will be wrapping up figurative language and completing final copies of our free-verse poems. In addition, we will start personal narratives. 
Science: We will begin a unit on simple machines. Students will learn about the different types of energy and how forces affect motion. 
ELA: We will continue to work on our biography projects, Students will continue to take notes, summarize, and organize information onto their posters.
